Real Racing
An editorial by David H. Screws / ATV Racin' Extra Media Group
I, for one, hated to see the demise of the WPSA and the tasty tray of treats they brought to the table of ATV
racing. But, if one stops a moment and reflects, there’s a very positive aspect that has grown out of their two year
involvement in the sport. Two seasons passed with racers in each of the two national motocross series, the WPSA
and the AMA/ATVA, continually badgering each other as to which of the two series hosted the best racers in the
nation. That rivalry has spilled over into this year’s MX Nationals. Not in the same pretense as a series against
another series, but in a sense that the best of the best in the nation have come back together to see who is the
best on the track.
As I find a vantage place on the track which gives me a good view of the
action, I find myself amazed at the levels of competition from the Pro
ranks, through the Amateur ranks, and down to the Youth ranks.
I’ve witnessed a lot of ATV racing over the years and have seen
the competition levels escalate from season to season. But, not
like this year.
It seems to me that ATV racing has progressed to a point that
the competition created by the racers will within itself enhance
the exposure of the sport. Already this year at the AMA/ATVA
events the numbers have set new records and the spectator
attendance has grown to a noticeable level.
I call it “Real Racing” for a reason. Now that the two
groups have meshed back together, the sport is
stronger than it has ever been. Even for me,
a person who’s traveled the nation to cover
ATV racing, the racing is worth
watching this year. There’s
an excitement in the air that
before was not there.
You can sense it, see it, smell
it and taste it. And...
this is good.
It's real racing. And, a sight for sore eyes.
