Nelson Nabs QuadCross Win
Cypress, CA (6/23/2008) - Aboard his blue-and-white Yamaha YFZ450, Dustin Nelson won both motos of the 2008 ITP Quadcross Championship Series in Surprise, Ariz. on Saturday night, June 21. The Yamaha rider’s 1-1 finishes under brutally hot conditions gave him the overall win and put him even further ahead in the points with five more rounds to go in the series.
Record heat in the western states made racing a challenge in the Arizona desert – even though the ITP Quadcross motos were held at night. In Nelson’s first race, he ripped the holeshot and led every lap, despite being pushed hard to the flag by second-place Brandon Smith. With temperatures still near 100 degrees at midnight, Nelson started the second moto in third behind fellow Yamaha racers Chris Riley and Justin Noss. But he forged his way into the lead by the third lap and never looked back, building up a sizable advantage at the finish.
“The heat is tough on you – I was hydrating with water all day long and I’m still thirsty today,” Nelson said on Sunday. “But I didn’t have to worry about overheating my Yamaha – I just kept the radiator clean and it was good to go.”
